Sea Kayak expedition day 6 – No squirrels, no seals, but lots of bunnies

Dover Old town

An appointment to the hairdressers had seemed ridiculous before I set off, but now, after less than a week on the water, my fringe is hanging in my eyes and my ponytail is completely tangled and matted together. I decide to use my day off to find a launderette to wash some clothes and a cheap hairdresser to untangle and cut my hair.

By three pm I have done all my chores and I am itching to go for a walk. I grab my Nordic Walking poles, some snacks and a bottle of water and make my way to the castle. It is a good workout, the path is steep and at times replaced by never ending stairs. When I finally get there, the castle is just about to shut. I don’t really mind; the views are spectacular from up here.

It is a good thing I am not kayaking; even though the sun is shining and the sky is clear blue, the wind really is blowing very hard and from up here I can see the sea churning and foaming.

I make my way back to the harbour, where the footpath to the top of the cliffs starts. I am glad I brought my poles, it feels good to loosen up my leg and back muscles after five days in a kayak. The path bounces up and down and left and right along the cliffs. It is fun to see part of the stretch I paddled the day from such a different angle. The fields are full of bunnies, I don’t think I have ever seen that many bunnies in one place!

It is a good thing it is almost midsummer; it past eight pm when I finally reach the lighthouse and decide to turn back.
