Friday 20 Sept: Afternoon walk in Peckham Rye Park, Nunhead cemetary and Sydenham Woods

Let’s make the best of this lovely late summer weather. Join us for a lovely afternoon walk exploring some of my favorite nature spots in South East London. We start in the hustle and bustle of Peckham Rye, but soon the city will open up into Peckham Common and Peckham Rye Park.

Peckham Rye Park is an often overlooked little juwel of a park. As a young child William Blake used to wander here from busy Soho (a 7 mile hike), and when he was 8, he had a vision of Angels in an oak tree. (If you are interested in Blake; Tate Britain currently has a huge exposition with his work)

We will continue our walk to Nunhead Cemetary, where we will most definitely encounter some angels ourselves. Nunhead cemetary is one of the magnificent 7 most beautiful cemetaries in London, wild and with wonderful views of the city. On we go, through backstreets and slivers of green until we reach the Park around the Horniman museum. Here we can have a cup of tea before we end our walk with a wander through Sydenham woods, another wild and wonderful green oasis in Southeast London.

How to get there:

We will meet at 13.00 by the tickethall of Peckham Rye station.
(Our walk will end by the former Grove Tavern on Lordhip Lane, from where you can hop on the P4, the 197, 176 or 185 bus back home)

Terrain and length of the route:

This is a 7 mile walk with some hilly bits and all kinds of terrain.. Please bring good footwear anyway! This is not a super slow walk, but there will be plenty of time to explore and enjoy the views and the nature around us.

Toilets, food/drinks & what to bring:
I suggest to stop for a cup of tea at the Horniman museum cafe. There are toilets in Peckham Rye Park and at the Horniman museum.

This walk will happen in any weather, unless it is unsafe. Please check the forecast and bring your waterproofs and (waterproof) shoes with a good grippy profile. It does look like it will be sunny, so don’t forget your sunscreen and/or a hat!

Who can join?

Anyone who can comfortably walk 7 miles in one afternoon.
Feel free to bring a friend or family member, with or without poles. Nordic Walkers or not, that doesn’t matter, as long as they are Fit (enough) and Happy! 😊

Cost:

£10. If you are one of our regular Fit and Happy Outdoors walkers I can recommend buying a ten-session card for £89.
(Train tickets and food or drinks at café not included)

Nordic Walking:

Many of our regulars are nordic walkers, but you can join this walk with or without Nordic Walking poles. Curious? If you have never Nordic Walked before then our free taster sessions are probably the best option to feel what Nordic Walking can do for you, and how it is different from just “walking with sticks”.

Don’t have your own poles? Would you like to borrow some from me? Text me the MORNING OF THE WALK on 078 078 3456 4 and I will bring you some. (please, please do not ask me days before, as I will forget and that will make us both unhappy!)

How to join this walk

New to Fit and Happy Outdoors? Please fill in the registration and health questionaire, which you can find here and email them to walks@fitandhappyoutdoors.com at least 24 hours before the session, mentioning in the header which walk you want to join. That will give us enough time to get back to you and discuss your needs and experience.

Please sign up for our Meetup Group to easily RSVP and find out when the next walks are.
