Saturday 25 January: Join us for a Thames walk and visit Chiswick house gardens

Let’s go for a lovely walk along the river Thames, visit the gardens of Chiswick House, enjoy the views from Hammersmith Bridge and explore a Leg of Mutton. No, that’s a nature reserve, not Sunday Roast.

On our walk we will take some time to explore the gardens of Chiswick House, and we will have some lunch in the garden cafe before we continue our walk.

Hogarth’s fans can pay a visit to his grave at Chiswick churchyard, which we will pass along the route. More information on this churchyard here.

How to find us:

We will meet at 9.45 am at Denmark Hill to get 10.07 am Overground train to Clapham Junction. (that should leave us some time to have a cup of coffee before we leave) From Clapham Junction, we will get the 10.32 am train in the direction of Weybridge, which should arrive at Barnes Bridge station at 10.45 am.

If this is easier for you, then please feel free to join us at Barnes Bridge.
If you are planning to meet us there, then please take note of my mobile 078 078 3456 4 and text me you are planning to do that, so that we are not getting all worried about you in Denmark Hill. 🙂

Terrain and length of the route:

The route is about 7 miles/ 11 kilometres, but might be slightly longer as we wander around Chiswick House gardens.

This walk mostly follows the river banks and is fairly flat. Barnes Bridge station does have steps to both platforms. If that is an issue for you, then you could go to Richmond and take a bus back to Barnes Bridge from there.

Toilets, food/drinks & what to bring:

I suggest we have lunch in the Chiswick house cafe, or you can find a nice bench in the garden and enjoy your picknick outside.

There are no toilets in Barnes Bridge station, but there are a pub and some coffeeshops nearby. Along the way we will pass some nice pubs, where I am sure we could use the facilities if we need them.

Don’t forget to bring something to drink for on the way.
This walk will happen in any weather, unless it is unsafe, so bring your waterproofs and (preferably waterproof) shoes with a good grippy profile.

Who can join?

Anyone who can comfortably walk 7 miles. Feel free to bring a friend or family member, with or without poles. Nordic Walker or not, you are very welcome to join us, if you are Fit (enough) and Happy! 😊
Cost:

£10. If you are one of our regular Fit and Happy Outdoors walkers I can recommend buying a ten-session card for £89.
(Train tickets and food or drinks at café not included)
Nordic Walking:

Many of our regulars are nordic walkers, but you can join this walk with or without Nordic Walking poles.

Curious?

If you have never Nordic Walked before then our free taster sessions are probably the best option to feel what Nordic Walking can do for you, and how it is different from just “walking with sticks”. However, I am happy to lend you some poles, and I am sure some of the walkers will give you some quick tips. Of course, if I do happen to have a spare moment, and don’t need all my wits to make sure we don’t get lost, I am happy to give you some pointers too.

Don’t have your own poles? Would you like to borrow some from me? Text me the MORNING OF THE WALK on 078 078 3456 4 and I will bring you some. (please, please do not ask me days before, as I will forget and that will make us both unhappy!)
