Sunday 13 January: join us for a walk along the Thames to Greenwich

Will you join us for a fabulous winter walk along the river Thames this Sunday? This time we will follow the mighty Thames upstream from the Woolwich Ferry Dock and Flood Barrier to the steps of the Royal Naval College. We will pass the O2 Arena, numerous wharfs including the Victoria Deep Water Terminal, Morden Wharf and Pipers Wharf.

We will enjoy dramatic views and might even spot some surprising wildlife.

Here is a nice video explaining the workings of the Thames flood Barrier you might be interested in.

Most of this walk will be close to the river except where existing buildings or redevelopments make us walk a short inland detour. It has some stunning landmarks and breath-taking views.

From Greenwich you can easily bus/tube or train your way home, or you can join us for a ride on a Thames Clipper to London Bridge and make your way home from there.

Where do we meet?

We meet up at 10.45 am at Woolwich Arsenal DLR and rail station, by the Costa coffeeshop next to the station.
Please take note of my mobile 078 078 3456 4, just in case you can’t find us!
*If you don’t like travelling alone and would like to travel with us; I plan to take the 9.39 bus 136 from the bus stop at St Georges Way/Burgess Park. At New Cross Bus garage, I will change to the 10.08 am bus 53 to Plumstead, which should bring us to Woolwich Arsenal around 10.35 am.

Terrain and length of the route:

The route is about 6.2 miles/ 10 kilometres. This walk follows mostly paved paths and is reasonably flat as we walk along the Thames.

Toilets, food/drinks & what to bring:

I suggest we bring a pick-nick and enjoy our lunch outside, but there are various places we could stop for a bite to eat and a hot drink if the weather isn’t nice enough to eat outside.
There are public toilets at various places along our route.
Don’t forget to bring something to drink for on the way.
This walk will happen in any weather unless it is unsafe, so bring your waterproofs if necessary, and (preferably waterproof) shoes with a good grippy profile, and make sure to bring a sunhat/cap or your sunglasses, as we often seem to be lucky with the weather!

Who can join?

Anyone who can comfortably walk 10 km.
Feel free to bring a friend or family member, with or without poles. Nordic Walkers or not, that doesn’t matter, as long as they are Fit (enough) and Happy! 😊

Need poles?

Don’t have your own poles? Would you like to borrow some from me? Text me the MORNING OF THE WALK on 078 078 3456 4 and I will bring you some. (please, please do not ask me days before, as I will forget and that will make us both unhappy!)

Thinking about buying your own?
Check our shop for a great range of poles. Too much choice? You might like to read this useful guide first. Feel free to give us a ring, we are happy to advise you on the best poles for your lifestyle, needs and wishes.
